For most trips to Italy, a fixed-data eSIM is the best value: 10 GB for 30 days cost $7.54 with us on 12 October 2026, against $12.00 with Ubigi and $19.00 with Airalo. Our Italy plan also works in 32 other European countries, so a side trip to France, Switzerland or Greece needs no second eSIM. For a single day in Rome, a day pass is $1.99. For daily video, our unlimited week is $11.00, against $23.00 with Airalo and $23.90 with Holafly, but ours slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day.

On fixed data the gap is large: our 10 GB plan costs less than half of Airalo’s. On unlimited plans, Airalo and Holafly charge almost the same, and the speed rules matter more than the price. Every plan we sell for Italy is listed on our Italy eSIM page.

Our Italy plans can be topped up. Their data exits in Poland, so websites see a Polish IP address; our guide to how a travel eSIM changes your IP address explains what that affects.

One Italy plan, 33 countries

Our Italy plan is not limited to Italy. Its plan page lists 32 more countries where the same eSIM works, including France, Spain, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia and the United Kingdom. A train to Nice or a ferry to Greece uses the same allowance.

Airalo’s Italy plan is for Italy only; its page says it covers the mainland, Sicily, Sardinia, Capri, Ischia and Elba. For a multi-country trip with Airalo you would buy its Europe plan, at $31.00 for 10 GB. Our guide to the best eSIM for Europe compares the regional plans, and which Europe eSIMs cover Switzerland and the UK covers the two countries that plans most often leave out.

The catch behind each option

  • Our Italy plans count calendar days. The day you first connect is day 1, and the plan ends at midnight UTC on day 30, which is 1 am or 2 am in Italy. If you land late at night, the first day is nearly gone, so start the plan the next morning if you can. Our guide to when an eSIM starts counting explains the rules.
  • Our unlimited plan slows down. You get 3 GB a day at up to 20 Mbps, then 1 Mbps until the next day. It covers 28 countries and does not include Switzerland.
  • Airalo’s unlimited plan also slows, to 1 Mbps after 5 GB a day, at about twice our price.
  • Holafly has no daily cap, but hotspot sharing is limited to 1 GB a day, and it sells unlimited data only.
  • Ubigi’s 10 GB plan costs $12.00. We did not check its other sizes.

How much data you need in Italy

Maps, train and museum bookings, messaging and some social media use about 500 MB to 1 GB a day. That makes 10 GB enough for two weeks for most travellers, and 20 GB enough for a month. Video calls and streaming use 1 to 3 GB an hour. Our travel data guide has the numbers by app.

When someone else’s plan is the better buy

  • You want unlimited data for a month. We do not sell it. Airalo’s 30 days cost $64.00 and Holafly’s $64.50.
  • You stream for hours every day. Holafly has no daily speed cap; ours and Airalo’s slow down.
  • You want an Italian IP address. Our Italy plans exit in Poland, and our Europe plan exits in the United Kingdom.
  • You need a phone number. All of these plans are data only. Our guide to Europe eSIMs with a phone number covers the two plans that include one.

Before you buy

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, on our compatibility list.
  • Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, using the install guide, and start it within 60 days of purchase.
  • Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and texts, with its data roaming switched off.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Italy?

For most trips, a fixed-data plan. On 12 October 2026, 10 GB for 30 days cost $7.54 with Code eSIM, $12.00 with Ubigi and $19.00 with Airalo. If you stream video every day, an unlimited week cost $11.00 with us, $23.00 with Airalo and $23.90 with Holafly.

Does a Europe eSIM work in Italy?

Yes, if Italy is on its country list, and every Europe plan we checked lists it. Our 34-country Europe plan costs $7.54 for 10 GB, the same as our Italy plan, which itself works in 32 other European countries.

Does an Italy eSIM work in other countries?

It depends on the plan. Our Italy plan lists 32 more countries where the same eSIM works, including France, Spain, Greece and the United Kingdom. Airalo’s Italy plan covers Italy only, including Sicily, Sardinia, Capri, Ischia and Elba.

How much data do I need for a week in Italy?

About 3 to 7 GB for maps, bookings, messaging and photos, at 500 MB to 1 GB a day. A 10 GB plan for $7.54 covers a week with room to spare and lasts 30 days, so it also covers a two-week trip.

Is there an unlimited eSIM for Italy?

Yes. On 12 October 2026 a week cost $11.00 with Code eSIM on a 28-country plan that slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day, $23.00 with Airalo, which slows after 5 GB a day, and $23.90 with Holafly, which has no daily cap.

Can I use hotspot with an Italy eSIM?

Our Italy plans and our unlimited Europe plan list hotspot as supported, and shared data comes out of the same allowance. Holafly limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. Check the plan page before you buy elsewhere.

For Italy, decide how many gigabytes you need and buy that. The price difference between providers is larger than the difference between their networks.
