Does a Europe eSIM Cover Switzerland and the UK? We Checked 54 Plans

October 1, 2026

Does a Europe eSIM cover Switzerland and the UK? Of 54 regional Europe eSIM plans checked, 36 cover both countries
Switzerland and the UK sit outside the EU’s roaming rules, so Europe plans treat them differently.

Usually, but not always. Of the 54 regional Europe plans on Code eSIM on 30 September 2026, 36 cover both Switzerland and the UK, 15 cover the UK but not Switzerland, and 3 cover Switzerland but not the UK. The gaps are not random. They follow the edge of the EU’s roaming rules, and every unlimited Europe plan we sell leaves out one of the two countries.

Here is how the mistake usually happens. You buy a Europe eSIM for a Milan, Zurich and Paris rail trip. It works perfectly in Italy. Then the train crosses the border at Chiasso and your map stops loading. The eSIM is still installed and still shows as active. It just has no Swiss network it is allowed to use, and you find out at the exact moment you need directions to the hotel.

  • 54 regional Europe plans checked, in 9 plan families. Every one covers all 27 EU countries.
  • 36 include both Switzerland and the UK, from $2.85 for 1 GB over 7 days.
  • 15 include the UK but not Switzerland: Airalo EUconnect and NextLink Europe.
  • 3 include Switzerland but not the UK: the eSIMGo Europe Premium unlimited plans.
  • A 34-country plan with both costs $7.54 for 10 GB over 30 days, the same price as a Switzerland-only 10 GB plan.

Why Switzerland and the UK are the countries that fall off

Inside the EU, mobile roaming runs on shared rules. The European Commission’s roaming page says Roam Like At Home applies in the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova. Switzerland is not on that list. The Commission also notes that since the UK left the EU, the regime no longer applies to trips to the UK.

A travel eSIM gets its service by using local networks country by country. Where the EU framework applies, adding one more country to a plan is routine. Switzerland and the UK sit outside it, so their access is arranged separately, and that is the most likely reason budget plans are drawn around the EU and stop short of one or both.

Geography does not help you here. Switzerland is surrounded by EU countries, but your phone does not care about the map. The plan’s country list decides whether you get data, and a plan can include Switzerland while leaving out the UK, as the Europe Premium plans below show.

What we found in 54 Europe plans

We counted a plan as a regional Europe plan if it covers at least 10 EU countries and no more than 60 countries in total. Top-up packs and out-of-stock plans are excluded. Prices are in US dollars as listed on 30 September 2026.

Plan family Countries Switzerland UK Example Data exits in
Europe (eSIMGo), 8 plans 34 Yes Yes 10 GB, 30 days, $7.54 UK
Europe Special (Sparks), 5 plans 35 Yes Yes 10 GB, 30 days, $9.90 UK
Europe and USA (Sparks), 10 plans 43 Yes Yes 12 GB, 30 days, $11.00 UK
Balkans Special (Sparks), 5 plans 40 Yes Yes 10 GB, 30 days, $12.80 UK
Half Global (Three), 6 plans 51 Yes Yes 12 GB, 30 days, $11.40 Hong Kong
EU with calls (Bouygues), 2 plans 34 Yes Yes 60 GB, 30 days, $36.74 France
Europe (NextLink), 7 plans 36 No Yes 12 GB, 30 days, $9.80 Western Europe
EUconnect (Airalo), 8 plans 28 No Yes 10 GB, 30 days, $9.00 Not published
Europe Premium (eSIMGo), 3 plans 35 Yes No Unlimited, 10 days, $27.44 UK / Ireland

Three details matter more than the headline count. EUconnect is exactly the 27 EU countries plus the UK, nothing else. NextLink reaches further than most, with Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Ukraine and Moldova, yet still skips Switzerland. And the two families with 34 and 35 countries show why a number alone tells you nothing: eSIMGo’s 34-country Europe plan has both countries, while its 35-country Premium plan has Switzerland and no UK.

All nine families list hotspot sharing as supported. The last column is where your internet traffic comes out, which affects the IP address websites see. It does not change which countries you get signal in. Our IP address guide explains why a plan can exit in Hong Kong and still work in Paris.

Heading to Switzerland? The Switzerland eSIM page lists every plan that covers Switzerland, regional plans included, so anything you pick there will work once you cross the border. For Britain, use the UK eSIM page the same way.

Unlimited Europe plans: each one misses a country

If you wanted unlimited data for a route through both Switzerland and the UK, our catalogue cannot give you that in one plan today. Both unlimited families have a hole, and it is a different hole in each:

Unlimited plan Lengths and prices Speed terms Switzerland UK
EUconnect Unlimited (Airalo) 3, 5, 7 or 10 days, $6.50 to $14.00 3 GB a day at 20 Mbps, then 1 Mbps No Yes
Europe Premium Unlimited (eSIMGo) 5, 10 or 15 days, $18.50 to $36.96 30, 60 or 90 GB at full speed in total, then 2 Mbps Yes No

Neither is unlimited at full speed, which is normal for the category; our unlimited data explainer covers what those speed lines mean in practice. For a trip through both countries, the realistic options are a large fixed plan that covers both, such as the eSIMGo Europe 50 GB for 30 days at $30.59, or the Bouygues 120 GB plan with calls at $47.04. Either one is simpler than juggling two unlimited plans.

Routes: when one plan covers you, and when it does not

Match the plan to the whole route, including day trips. These examples use the nine families above.

Route Families that cover all of it Families that do not
Paris, Geneva, Zermatt, Milan Any family with Switzerland: 7 of 9 EUconnect, NextLink
London, Paris, Amsterdam Every family except one: 8 of 9 Europe Premium
London, Zurich, Vienna The six families with both countries EUconnect, NextLink, Europe Premium
Munich, Vienna, Prague, Budapest All 9 (EU only) None
Dubrovnik, Kotor, Tirana Balkans Special, Europe and USA, Half Global The other six
Athens, then Istanbul All except two EUconnect, Bouygues
New York, then London and Paris Europe and USA, Half Global The other seven

The Balkans and Turkey rows are there because they cause the same surprise as Switzerland. A plan called Europe can mean the EU and little else. If your route leaves the EU at any point, check that country by name.

When a Switzerland-only plan makes sense

We also sell Switzerland-only plans, with Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt listed as the networks on 4G LTE:

Here is the honest comparison. If your trip is Switzerland and nowhere else, a Switzerland-only plan is the simple choice. If you will spend even one day in France, Italy, Germany or Austria, the 34-country eSIMGo Europe 10 GB plan costs the same $7.54 and covers both Switzerland and the UK as well. At that size there is nothing to save by going single-country.

If you already bought a plan without Switzerland, you do not need to replace it. Add a Swiss day pass for the days you are there, install it alongside the first eSIM, and switch your mobile data line when you cross the border. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM while you do this. Our guide to accidental roaming charges shows the settings that stop your main line from quietly taking over.

How to check a plan before you buy

  1. Open the product page and find the Destinations and networks table. It lists every covered country with its carriers. Look for Switzerland and United Kingdom by name. Do not rely on the word Europe in the plan title.
  2. Ignore the country count. 34 countries can include both; 35 can include one. Only the list answers the question.
  3. Start from the country page. The Switzerland and UK pages only show plans that cover that country, so you skip the checking entirely.
  4. Read the speed line on unlimited plans. It tells you when full speed ends and what you get after that.
  5. Check your phone first. Make sure it supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked on our compatibility page, then follow the install guide on Wi-Fi before you fly.

Final takeaway

Most Europe eSIMs we sell do cover Switzerland and the UK, but “most” is 36 of 54, and the ones that do not are often the cheapest or the unlimited ones. Thirty seconds on the country list is all it takes to avoid losing data at the Swiss border.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Europe eSIM work in Switzerland?

Only if Switzerland is on its country list. Of the 54 regional Europe plans we checked on 30 September 2026, 39 include Switzerland and 15 do not: Airalo EUconnect and NextLink Europe. Check the Destinations and networks table on the product page before you buy.

Is the UK included in Europe eSIM plans?

In most of them. 51 of the 54 regional Europe plans we checked include the UK. The exception is the eSIMGo Europe Premium unlimited range, which covers 35 countries including Switzerland but not the UK. Always confirm the United Kingdom by name in the country list.

Does EU roaming cover Switzerland?

No. According to the European Commission, Roam Like At Home applies in the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Ukraine and Moldova. Switzerland is not included, and trips to the UK stopped being covered when it left the EU. Check with your home operator before relying on roaming.

Is there an unlimited Europe eSIM that covers both Switzerland and the UK?

Not in our catalogue on 30 September 2026. EUconnect Unlimited leaves out Switzerland and Europe Premium Unlimited leaves out the UK. For a route through both, a large fixed plan is the practical choice, such as eSIMGo Europe 50 GB for 30 days at $30.59.

What happens if I enter Switzerland with a plan that does not cover it?

The eSIM stays installed but has no network to use there, so data stops until you leave or add a plan that covers Switzerland. A Swiss day pass starts at $1.99. Keep data roaming off on your home line so it does not start roaming in the meantime.

Which Europe eSIM also covers the Balkans?

Balkans Special covers 40 countries, adding Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania, plus Switzerland and the UK. Europe and USA covers Serbia, Montenegro and Albania too. Half Global covers all five of those Balkan countries across 51 destinations.

Last reviewed 30 September 2026. Plan counts, country lists and prices come from our own catalogue on that date and change often; product pages are authoritative. A regional Europe plan here means one covering at least 10 EU countries and no more than 60 countries in total, excluding top-up packs and out-of-stock plans. EU roaming scope is from the European Commission’s roaming policy page. Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt, Airalo, eSIMGo, Bouygues and Three are trademarks of their owners; this article is independent of them.
