For most trips, iPhone 18 Pro Max is the more practical travel phone and iPhone Duo is the more useful one to hold. The Pro Max lasts longer on a charge, zooms much further, costs US$700 less and, if you buy it in the UK, Europe or most of Asia, still has a SIM tray. The Duo gives you a 7.6-inch screen that folds to pocket size, which changes how you use maps, bookings and translation on the move.
The surprise is how close they are where travellers expect a gap. By Apple’s figures the Duo weighs 254 g and the 18 Pro Max 249 g, a 5 g difference. Both are rated IP68 to 6 metres for 30 minutes, both run the A20 Pro chip, and both hold two active eSIMs with eight or more stored. The differences that matter abroad are SIM options, battery, zoom and price.
- SIM: iPhone Duo is eSIM-only in every country. iPhone 18 Pro Max is eSIM-only in 12 markets, including the US, Japan and the UAE, and keeps a nano-SIM tray elsewhere.
- Battery: up to 30 hours of typical use on the 18 Pro Max, up to 24 hours on the Duo.
- Zoom: 8x optical-quality on the 18 Pro Max, 2x on the Duo.
- Price (US): from US$1,299 for the 18 Pro Max, from US$1,999 for the Duo.
- Timing: the 18 Pro Max is in stores from 18 September 2026; the Duo from 23 October, 35 days later.

Two footnotes worth knowing. Apple’s 45-hour figure for the 18 Pro Max is for the eSIM-only versions; its announcement says those have a larger battery giving about two more hours than the tray versions. And the US models list identical 5G bands, including mmWave. The only difference in Apple’s band lists is LTE band 106, which appears for iPhone Duo (model A3447) and not for the US iPhone 18 Pro Max (model A3473); the rest of the LTE list matches.

SIM options: the difference most comparisons skip
If you live in the UK, Europe, Australia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore or South Korea, this may decide it. Apple sells iPhone 18 Pro Max there with a nano-SIM tray as well as eSIM. iPhone Duo has no tray anywhere; Apple calls it an “eSIM-only design worldwide”.
A tray still earns its keep for a few kinds of traveller: people who buy local SIM cards on long stays, people whose home carrier or plan does not support eSIM, and people who move a SIM between phones. For everyone else the difference is small, because a travel eSIM does the data job on both. Our country-by-country list is in does iPhone 18 Pro have a SIM card slot, and what an eSIM-only phone changes on a trip is in iPhone Duo is eSIM-only.
In the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan and the Gulf states, this row disappears: both phones are eSIM-only there.
Travelling with either one? Both run a travel eSIM alongside your home line. Find a data plan for your destination, starting with Japan, Europe or the US.
Battery: the Pro Max is the safer long-haul phone
Apple rates the 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and the Duo at up to 24. Travel days are where that gap shows: boarding passes, maps, a hotspot for a laptop and photos all pull from the same battery, often without a charger in reach.
The Duo’s figures depend on which screen you use. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and 31 on the inner one. Keep it folded for navigation and quick checks, and it behaves like a regular phone; open it for long stretches and you should expect less. The Pro Max also charges slightly faster: about 50% in 15 minutes against about 20 for the Duo, both with a 60W adapter.
Screen and zoom: where each one is genuinely better
The Duo’s inner screen is the reason to buy it. A map beside a booking confirmation, a translation beside a menu, or a boarding pass beside a message is a real change on a 7.6-inch display, not a party trick. Apple says the inner display is 50% larger than the 18 Pro Max’s.
The 18 Pro Max answers with its camera. Its 4x Telephoto and 8x optical-quality zoom reach cathedral ceilings, wildlife and stage performances that a 2x lens cannot. If travel photography is a priority, that matters more than the screen.
A bigger screen does tend to mean more data. Maps, video and split-screen browsing all scale up with the display, so if you choose the Duo, size your plan up rather than assuming last year’s amount will do. Our guide to how much data you need abroad has app-by-app numbers.

Timing a purchase around a trip
The launch dates may choose for you. iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders opened on 12 September 2026, with availability from 18 September in more than 65 countries and from 25 September in 20 more. iPhone Duo pre-orders open on 16 October, with availability from 23 October in more than 70 countries and from 30 October in 28 more.
If you fly between 18 September and 23 October, only one of these can be in your pocket. If you are upgrading close to departure, move your number first and install the travel eSIM last; how to transfer your eSIM to a new iPhone covers the order, and the trade-in checklist covers the phone you are replacing.
Which one to take abroad
| If this describes you | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You buy local SIM cards or your carrier lacks eSIM, and you live where the tray version is sold | iPhone 18 Pro Max | The only one of the two that can take a SIM card |
| Long days away from a charger | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Up to 30 hours of typical use against 24 |
| Travel photography, wildlife, concerts | iPhone 18 Pro Max | 8x optical-quality zoom against 2x |
| Maps, bookings and documents side by side | iPhone Duo | A 7.6-inch inner screen that folds away |
| You read, work or watch a lot in transit | iPhone Duo | A small tablet without carrying one |
| Travelling before 23 October | iPhone 18 Pro Max | The Duo is not on sale yet |
| Budget matters | iPhone 18 Pro Max | US$700 less at US starting prices |
Whichever you pick, the travel data side works the same way: an unlocked phone, a plan for your destination installed on Wi-Fi before you fly, and your home line kept on for calls and codes. Keeping your number with a travel eSIM walks through the settings, and the plan’s activation rule tells you when the clock starts: of the 830 plans on sale in our catalogue on 13 September 2026, 683 start on first data use.
How we compared, and what this cannot tell you
Specifications, prices and dates are from Apple’s technical specification pages and its announcements of 9 September 2026, read on 13 September 2026. US prices are starting prices before tax and vary by country. Battery figures are Apple’s lab tests, not ours.
We have not used either phone: the 18 Pro Max reaches buyers on 18 September and the Duo on 23 October. Nothing here judges how the Duo’s hinge, crease or folding display hold up over a year of travel; wait for long-term reviews on that. Frequently asked questions
Is iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max better for travel?
For most trips, iPhone 18 Pro Max: it lasts longer, zooms further, costs US$700 less in the US and keeps a SIM tray in many countries. iPhone Duo is better if a 7.6-inch screen for maps, bookings and reading on the move matters more to you than battery or zoom.
Is iPhone Duo heavier than iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Only slightly. Apple lists iPhone Duo at 254 g and iPhone 18 Pro Max at 249 g, a 5 g difference. The Duo is shorter but wider and thicker when closed, at 11.3 mm against 8.75 mm, so it sits differently in a pocket.
Does iPhone 18 Pro Max have better battery life than iPhone Duo?
By Apple’s figures, yes. It rates iPhone 18 Pro Max at up to 30 hours of typical use and iPhone Duo at up to 24. The Duo’s video playback depends on the screen: up to 44 hours on the outer display and 31 hours on the inner one.
Can I use a physical SIM card in iPhone Duo?
No. Apple describes iPhone Duo as an eSIM-only design worldwide, with two active eSIMs and eight or more stored. iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps a nano-SIM tray where Apple sells that version, including the UK, Europe, Australia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.
Which has the better camera for travel photos?
iPhone 18 Pro Max, if distance matters. It has a 48MP 4x Telephoto and 8x optical-quality zoom, plus variable aperture on the main camera. iPhone Duo has 48MP Main and Ultra Wide cameras with 2x optical-quality zoom and features built around its two screens.
How much more does iPhone Duo cost?
In the US, iPhone Duo starts at US$1,999 and iPhone 18 Pro Max at US$1,299, a US$700 difference at starting prices. Both come in 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Prices vary by country and include local taxes outside the US.
Will a travel eSIM work the same on both phones?
Yes. Both support two active eSIMs, so a travel data plan can run beside your home line, and the US models list the same 5G bands. The phone needs to be carrier-unlocked. Expect to use more data on the Duo’s larger screen.
When can I buy iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max?
iPhone 18 Pro Max is available from 18 September 2026 in more than 65 countries. iPhone Duo pre-orders open on 16 October, with availability from 23 October in more than 70 countries and from 30 October in 28 more.
Bottom line
If a phone has to survive long travel days, cope with local SIM cards and photograph things you cannot walk up to, take the iPhone 18 Pro Max and keep the US$700. If what you actually do on trips is navigate, book, read and translate, the Duo’s screen is the first iPhone feature in years that changes that routine. Weight, water resistance and the chip are not reasons to choose either; the SIM tray, the battery and the zoom are.
