Not on a Hong Kong connection. TikTok withdrew its app from Hong Kong in July 2020, and OpenAI’s list of supported countries does not include Hong Kong, Macau or mainland China. Apps and websites largely judge where you are from your IP address, and on a travel eSIM that is the country where your data exits, not the one you are standing in. All 15 Hong Kong plans Code eSIM sold on 26 October 2026 exit in Indonesia, where both TikTok and ChatGPT are offered; 10 GB for 30 days cost $7.00.
That last detail is the one most visitors miss. A local Hong Kong SIM gives you a Hong Kong address, and so do some travel eSIMs, even when you use them somewhere else in Asia. Below: what changed in Hong Kong, how to tell where a plan’s data exits, which of our Asia plans exit where, and the trade-offs of an Indonesian address.
What changed in Hong Kong
TikTok. In July 2020, days after the national security law took effect, TikTok said it would stop operating the app in Hong Kong and remove it from the Google and Apple app stores there, as CNBC reported from Reuters. We found no report of it returning since.
ChatGPT. OpenAI publishes the countries and territories where its services are offered. On 26 October 2026 the list did not include Hong Kong, Macau or mainland China. It did include Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
Neither is a block on your phone. Both services decide what to show from the connection you arrive on, which is why the same phone can behave differently on hotel Wi-Fi, a local SIM and a travel eSIM.
Roaming eSIMs and the exit country
Most travel eSIMs are roaming lines. In Hong Kong you connect to a local network, but your data is carried back to the eSIM’s home network and leaves for the internet there. Websites see that exit country. Our Hong Kong plans connect to the local network listed on the plan page, H3G or CTM, and exit in Indonesia, through the Indonesian carrier Indosat.
You do not have to guess. Each of our plan pages shows the exit as “IP routing location”. Among the plans in our catalogue that cover one to three countries, this is where the data exited on 26 October 2026:

All of them start on first data use in Hong Kong, list hotspot and top-up as supported, and need data roaming switched on for the eSIM after you install it. What an Indonesian address changes
- Language. Google search and app stores may open in Indonesian at first; switch the language in their settings.
- Sites blocked in Indonesia. They may not open on these plans, in Hong Kong or anywhere else.
- Banking apps. Your bank may ask you to confirm a login from a new country.
- Account rules. OpenAI’s supported-countries page says that using its services outside the listed countries may lead to an account being blocked or suspended. Your network address is only part of how a service decides where you are, so read its terms if you rely on it for work.
Traveling from Vietnam
Vietnam is on OpenAI’s list, and TikTok, Facebook and Zalo all work at home, so a Hong Kong SIM is a step backwards for many Vietnamese travelers, especially anyone who sells through TikTok Shop. Does TikTok work in Hong Kong?

Look for “IP routing location” or a similar line on the plan page. On 26 October 2026, 15 of the 18 Code eSIM plans covering Hong Kong with up to three countries exited in Indonesia; the other three, which also cover mainland China, exited in Hong Kong.
Does this work in Macau, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia too?

Is an eSIM with an Indonesian IP slower?
Your data travels to Indonesia before it reaches the internet, which adds some distance compared with a local exit. We have not run speed tests; for messaging, maps, social media and video it is the same kind of roaming setup most travel eSIMs use.
